Art-freediving FOUNDATIONS course description and FAQ

A 3-Session introduction to aquatic movement, breath & underwater dance

art of moving in water - with ease, awareness and fluidity.

This introductory course offers a gentle yet structured exploration of art freediving and aquatic movement, combining essential freediving principles with somatic awareness, relaxation and creative underwater expression.

Over three sessions, we will progressively develop confidence, comfort and freedom of movement in water. Through a combination of land-based preparation, theoretical understanding and guided pool practice, participants will discover how to work with buoyancy, breath, gravity and water resistance to move more efficiently and effortlessly.

Rather than focusing on depth or performance, we will cultivate a sensitive relationship with water, learning to trust its support, understand its physical properties and explore the body's natural capacity for fluid movement.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed for:

  • Complete beginners with no previous experience in freediving or art freediving.

  • Returning participants who have attended a few classes and would like to revisit and strengthen their foundations.

  • Dancers, movement practitioners and water enthusiasts curious about underwater movement and artistic expression.

  • Anyone wishing to build confidence in water before progressing towards more advanced aquatic practices or formal freediving training.

No previous freediving certification is required. Participants should be comfortable entering a swimming pool and willing to learn progressively within their own limits.

Curriculum

Session 1 — Finding Ease: Breath, Relaxation & Water Support

Building trust in the aquatic environment.

We begin by exploring the foundations of relaxation and body awareness, both on land and in water.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to art freediving and fundamental safety principles.

  • Basic physics of immersion: pressure, buoyancy and water resistance.

  • Physiological responses to breath-hold immersion.

  • Preparatory breathing, full inhalation and recovery breathing.

  • Relaxation and psychological techniques for reducing unnecessary tension.

  • Experiencing water support, floating and basic body alignment.

  • First gentle underwater movements.

Session 2 — Finding Flow: Buoyancy, Equalization & Efficient Movement

Learning to move with water rather than against it.

The second session introduces the biomechanics of aquatic movement and the relationship between movement, energy expenditure and hydrodynamics.

Topics include:

  • Basic equalization techniques and safe descent preparation.

  • Understanding buoyancy and changes in body position underwater.

  • Hydrodynamics: reducing resistance and unnecessary effort.

  • Efficient movement patterns, gliding, spirals and transitions.

  • Developing orientation and spatial awareness underwater.

  • Combining breath, relaxation and movement into short aquatic sequences.

Session 3 — Finding Expression: From Technique to Underwater Dance

Transforming aquatic skills into creative movement.

In the final session, we integrate the foundations into a more continuous and expressive underwater movement practice.

Topics include:

  • Reviewing breath preparation, equalization and recovery techniques.

  • Refining movement efficiency, relaxation and buoyancy control.

  • Exploring fluid transitions, changes of direction and three-dimensional movement.

  • Developing short artistic movement phrases underwater.

  • Exploring individual movement qualities and improvisation.

  • Introduction to the possibilities of more advanced art freediving.

A Gateway ...

This course is conceived as the first step in a longer artistic and somatic journey with water.

After completing the foundations, participants may continue towards specialized masterclasses exploring:

  • Underwater movement with flowing fabrics and tissues.

  • Rope work and underwater pole dance.

  • Maskless aquatic movement.

  • Contact improvisation and underwater partnering.

  • Advanced three-dimensional movement and deeper-water choreography.

  • Artistic underwater filming and collaborative creation.

  • Further freediving training and certification pathways.

Our approach: Safety, relaxation and awareness come before depth, duration or artistic achievement. All breath-hold activities are supervised, with appropriate recovery and buddy procedures. We do not practise hyperventilation or unsupervised breath-holding.

The intention is not simply to learn how to move underwater, but to discover how water can become a partner in movement — supporting, shaping and inspiring new possibilities of bodily expression.

Select this session, proceed to payment. Individual session cost is 27 euros, you can pay via card or Bancontact. Another options is to pay 3 sessions at once (with flexible dates). In this case the price is 60 euros (so 20 euros for a session). You have access to this option if you buy a BRONZE CARD from the main menu (Ma carte bronze, just below Inscription a une seance).

2. What you need for a session:

  • Freediving mask (I recommend Salvimar incredible, Molchanovs or C4 Falcon).

  • Snorkel

  • Swimsuit, possible lycra shirt (something on shoulders, sometimes it can be a bit cold at surface, although water is at +32)

  • Water bottle (it is important to hydrate during the session to have smooth equalization)

  • Towel
